PHOENIX (KSAZ) - She was left alone in a room with seven convicted sex offenders, one of them stabbed and raped her.

Now she has filed a $4 million dollar claim against the Arizona Department of Corrections.

The teacher's attorney says his client actually wants to go back to teaching in prisons. But emotionally, she's still suffering from that terrible incident that happened six months ago.

Now she is suing the DOC saying they failed miserably to keep her safe.

In the photos of Jacob Harvey, you can see blood on his hands and shirt. The photos were taken after the assault at the Eyman unit, a medium custody facility in Florence.

The claim states that Harvey stabbed the teacher several times with a pen before he tore her clothes off and raped her.

"He should never have been in a medium custody unit; he is young, and he was sentenced to more than 25 years in prison," said Scott Zwillinger, her attorney.

The teacher is in her mid-30's and had been teaching at the prison for a couple of years. She was administering a GED test that day; testing was moved to a room she usually doesn't teach in.

"She was in a classroom with 7 sex offenders, there were no corrections present, no one doing checks on her, no radio checks, no cameras, nothing... if you talk to the folks who work down there they know security is extremely compromised, our prisons in Arizona are overcrowded, this is a result of that," he said.

The teacher was alone with the inmates for 1 1/2 hrs, and each inmate left the classroom after they finished the test. Authorities say the last inmate to finish, Jacob Harvey, is the one who stabbed her several times with a pen before he raped her.

"She fought this guy off, at first tried everything she could to stop this from happening. Her strength has got her through, but as you can imagine she has had her bad days. She very much wants to go back to work, but she's dealing with the effects of this horrific crime and breach of trust," said Zwillinger.

Prison officials have said there were no security lapses that led to the rape, but they have since begun installing cameras at prison classrooms, increased security checks on non-guards, and have begun issuing them pepper spray.
