Marygrove College president wants to help child immigrants

Posted: Updated:
DETROIT (WJBK) - The immigration crisis at the border continues to make its way to Michigan. Now, the president of Marygrove College says he wants to provide resources to help child immigrants from Central America.

This comes amid protests over plans to house illegal immigrant children at a facility in Vassar, a small town near Saginaw.

"I've seen students come from three blocks from here, Six Mile and Wyoming, that a lot of people said didn't have what it takes to be a college graduate. And I would be delighted to introduce you to them now. They're leaders in this community," says David Fike, Marygrove College's president.

Marygrove College is a small liberal arts college in the heart of the Detroit that gives about 6 million dollars a year in scholarships to low-income students in the city. It's a mission they are looking to expand to Central American children crossing the boarder.

"We would accept college-ready refugees with scholarships and we would even take the step, we're considering how we would be able to make available excess space in our residence hall to be able to feed, house and provide security and even customized education for age appropriate refugees," Fike says.

It would be a life-changing contribution that could have a far reaching impact, but Fike says first President Obama must declare the more than 50 thousand children that have crossed the boarder a refugee crisis.

"I think when we approach these human crises with an open heart they don't become us against them. In reality, this is a call for us as an institution to do what we ask for our students to do, which is to lead," he says.

Marygrove gave Fox 2 a tour of their available housing, but space is limited with 20 available rooms.

"I'm not naive. I don't believe that Marygrove's stance by itself is going to change this dynamic," says Fike. "When people act from their core values and act in a manner in which Jesus has asked us to, which is not out of fear and selfishness but out of a full heart, pretty amazing things happen."

He says the stance is a call to action to schools across the country to get involved.
