Judge tells young Detroit man he needed a beating

Posted: Updated:
DETROIT (WJBK) - The final person admittedly involved in the beating of Steven Utash in Detroit learned his punishment Thursday in court.

Wayne County Judge James Callahan sentenced 19-year-old Latrez Cummings to three years probation with the first six months spent at the Wayne County Jail. He agreed to a plea deal.

Cummings is among four men and a juvenile who admitted to punching and kicking Utash after he struck a boy with his pickup truck in April.

During the sentencing, things got pretty heated between the prosecutor and the judge.

It started when in response to the judge's question, Cummings said his father wasn't around when he was growing up.

Callahan said Cummings needed a dad, "someone to discipline you. Someone to beat the hell out of you when you made a mistake, as opposed to allowing you or encouraging you to do it to somebody else."

The judge says he understands how Cummings fell into a life of crime because he didn't have a father figure, but the prosecutor wasn't buying it.

"That is no excuse, Judge. That is setting a low bar. There are plenty of young black males who live in Detroit who are raised by single mothers who do not, I repeat, do not, engage in criminal activity. There are plenty of young black males who do not have a father who live in the city of Detroit who do not come into court and lie to a judge. There are plenty of young black males who live in the city of Detroit who do not behave the way this man behaves," says assistant Wayne Co. Prosecutor Lisa Lindsey.

The judge warned Cummings if he gets into trouble again he might not be as lenient.

Cummings was sentenced under the Holmes Youthful Trainee Act, which means his permanent record could be wiped clean.
