NJ seniors help make wine for retirement community

Posted: Updated:
NEW JERSEY (MYFOXNY.COM) -

Many things get better with age like wine. And some seniors from New Jersey are putting their own spin on this concept by helping to make wine.

This group of seniors includes former teachers, engineers, librarians and homemakers. Now well into retirement, they are keeping their spirits high by making wine.

All live independently at the Harrogate Retirement Community in Lakewood. Many are in their 80s and 90s. They worked hard at corking, labeling and boxing their signature wines.

Every year the owners of The Wine Room in Manalapan supply the equipment and the grapes. The seniors supply the man power. About five hundred bottles are made from one barrel of white and one red.

When all their work is done, the winemakers will take the fruits of their labor back to their assisted living community for everyone to enjoy.

Newark police engaged in the excessive use of force, routinely stopped people on the street for no legitimate reason and regularly stole property from civilians, the U.S. Department of Justice concluded in a report released Tuesday that set the stage for federal monitoring of the police department that serves New Jersey's largest city. The report is the culmination of a three-year investigation begun months after the American Civil Liberties Union filed a complaint.

Anaconda sightings in Lake Hopatcong reported

Boaters in Lake Hopatcong in New Jersey are keeping an eye out for an unwanted visitor lurking underwater: a 14- or 15-foot-ong snake, possibly a green anaconda. Several people have seen the reptile, which has probably holed up in a drain pipe. Reptile specialists are also searching the lake for signs of the snake. So far no more sightings have been reported.
