PHOENIX (KSAZ) - A 72 year-old woman is recovering after she was attacked by a pack of dogs. Her grandson spoke with FOX 10 about the battle she has ahead.

Her story is inspirational, and it's also heartbreaking. She would go to the park every morning to collect cans to earn a little extra money. Now she can't do that and she's got lots of medical bills. Her family has raised $250 but needs thousands more.

"Anybody, any human being shouldn't have to go thru this, it's turned our world upside down for lack of better words," said Dwayne Meeden.

His grandmother, Elia Gutierrez, is back home and recovering after being attacked by a pack of dogs. She's got a long road ahead of her.

"It's very hard, I was bitten by a dog when I was younger, and that one dog bite hurt. I can't imagine being bitten over your entire body," said Meeden.

Elia is 72 years-old, she's retired and was collecting cans at a park when the attack happened.

"She turns them in for money here and there, not much, $10-$12 but it's something," he said.

Now Elia cannot collect cans until she gets better. She's not sure if Medicaid is going to pay for her medical bills and to top it off Elia doesn't have air conditioning in her home. She's lived in the same home for 40 years.

"she never complains, never complained once, she doesn't complain about anything once," said Meeden.

She didn't even complain when doctors shaved off her hair. The dogs attacked the back of her head. Classy Sisters Wigs and Arizona Wig Boutique donated wigs for Elia to wear. Despite everything she's endured, she's so thankful to be alive. Thankful for the good samaritan and doctors who saved her life.

"It's unbelievable, it's just absolutely unbelievable to see a human being so through something like that, and still have their spirit and try to be happy about and counting her blessings and not her problems. It's just truly amazing," he said.

Elia is accepting donations to help pay for her medical bills at: http://www.gofundme.com/bk03k4 or any Bank of America Branch, reference the Elia Gutierrez account.
