Arizona Highway Patrol officer injured in crash near Payson

PHOENIX (KSAZ) - An Arizona Department of Public Safety Highway Patrol officer has been injured in a crash on Highway 87 near Payson.

Officer Carrick Cook said that the officer was responding to a medical emergency during a storm in the area.

Approximately 5 miles south of Payson he is believed to have lost control and crashed.

DPS's Ranger helicopter transported the officer to a valley hospital with serious injuries, as of 9 p.m. Officer Cook said the injured officer is expected to survive.

Highway 87 was closed while authorities investigated the crash.
