Some Home Depot stores selling 3D printers

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

Amidst the tools and home improvement items at a Manhattan Home Depot store is a new product redefining do-it-yourself: a 3D printer.

By now you've probably heard of 3D printing, but you may not have actually seen how it works or what the technology can produce.

That is why MakerBot, one of the biggest makers of 3D printers, has set up shop in a dozen Home Depot stores across the country as part of a special pilot program.

MakerBot's Mark Nix has been showing off the printer at a Home Depot in Midtown Manhattan. When we stopped by, Nix was printing a wall socket cover. But he showed us some of the other things he has made with the home printer, including some tools.

3D printing is already widely used in the medical, education and even fashion industries. But the hope is selling the printers at Home Depot will help bring the technology to the masses.

They start at about $1,300.

As of now you can find the MakerBot 3D printers at Home Depot on East 59th Street and 3rd Avenue and at the Chelsea location. If the pilot is successful, the printers could be in more stores soon.
