FOUNTAIN HILLS, Ariz. (AP) - The Maricopa County Sheriff's Office says one of its deputies fatally shot a Fountain Hills man who was naked when he opened the officer's patrol car and tried to take his gun.

Sheriff Joe Arpaio says 26-year-old David Brandstetter was first reported walking in traffic shortly before the shooting early Sunday and was later spotted by the officer as Brandstetter was in a neighborhood.

Arpaio says Brandstetter opened the patrol car when the deputy stopped to talk to him, punched the officer, tried to put the vehicle into drive and attempted to take away the officer's gun.

The officer then shot Brandstetter, who was pronounced dead at the scene.

Arpaio says it's unknown whether Brandstetter was intoxicated or had psychological problems.

There was no listed phone number for Brandstetter's home.
