Motorists Thought Body On Gurney In Street Was Joke

Posted: Updated:

Only on FOX: A man speaks out about an incident no one wants to see or experience. Many thought it was a joke, but unfortunately, it was all too real.

This Bucks County man says you needed to see it to believe it.

It happened along Street Road in Lower Southampton Township this weekend. And the man who jumped in to help spoke Sunday night only to FOX 29's Chris O'Connell.

The Bucks County Coroner's Office is apologizing for the horrifying accident witnessed by dozens of motorists in Feasterville when a dead body on a gurney spilled out of the back of a county-owned truck and onto the roadway.

Jerry Bradley has now seen it all.

"It just got more and more surreal as I watched," he said.

He's talking about the body on a rolling gurney that fell out into the middle of the busy intersection as dozens of cars drove by.

"At first, it was weird because nobody was stopping," Bradley said. "And I'm looking around to see if there's any cameras or anything around and it was some kind of a weird prank but. … Yeah, I did. And everyone was just driving around it. No one was stopping."

Bradley jumped out of his car to help the driver get the body back in the truck.

"Then, it started to sink in what it really was," he said. "And I walked up to the stretcher and saw that it was a body bag covered in a sheet. Then, I knew, I was like, 'Oh wow, this is no joke.'"

Bucks County officials say a rear door of the 2002 Chevy pickup had a mechanical malfunction during the transport. The truck now has bungee cords secure the back hatch.

In a statement, the county says, "The Bucks County Coroner's Office deeply regrets this incident and will take steps to ensure that it is not repeated in the future"

The bizarre accident had motorists in the area buzzing.

"I have no words. I usually do. And I don't," one passerby said.

"To be honest, I would think it's a prank," said another, Joey Bluestein, of Southampton. "I would think it's a stunt, and someone's pulling my chain, and they just wanted to do one of those candid camera things."

Unfortunately, it was all too real. Officials say the body was that of a young woman who died of a drug overdose. For Bradley, it's an afternoon he'll never forget.

"I thought, 'This is like the weirdest thing I've ever seen.' But then I was like, I didn't know if I should laugh or what. And I was thinking, 'This is somebody's loved one laying here on the highway," Bradley said.

The county coroner says there will be an investigation into the incident and the driver. As for that truck, it has been taken out of service.
