MESA, Ariz. (AP) - A Mesa man has been arrested by Maricopa County Sheriff's deputies for alleged animal cruelty in the death of his dog.

Deputies say 40-year-old Brian Womack failed to provide adequate shelter and water for a 16-month-old male pit bull.

The dead dog was found chained up in the Womack's yard where deputies say there was no shade or water in temperatures near 110 degrees.

Authorities say Womack insisted that his dog died because a neighbor poisoned it.

Deputies took the animal to veterinarian for an examination. They say the vet determined the cause of death to be extreme heat exhaustion.

Womack was arrested and booked into jail Wednesday. It's unclear if he has a lawyer yet.
