72-year-woman attacked by 5 dogs in a Phoenix park

PHOENIX (AP) - A 72-year-old woman is hospitalized in critical condition after being attacked by five dogs at a Phoenix park.

Phoenix police say the incident occurred about 5:30 a.m. Wednesday at Barrios Unidos Park near 16th Street and Mohave.

They say the victim had been collecting cans as she regularly does in the area.

A passer-by saw the pack of dogs attack the woman and called 911.

When officers arrived at the scene, they found the victim suffering from multiple, severe dog bites.

"The suspect animals were still at the scene and one of the animals, attacked the officers. One officer fired one round from his duty weapon, striking the animal in the mouth area. At that time the dogs fled the area to their home in the area of 1500 S. 12th St," per the police report.

Authorities say officers later learned the victim was collecting cans at the park when she was attacked.

Maricopa County Animal Care and Control officials say the five Rottweiler mixes have since been euthanized at the request of their owner.

Officials say none of the dogs appear to have been licensed and they all will be tested for rabies at a state lab this week.

The victim's name has not been released.
