Rain makes way for campfires in northern Arizona

Posted: Updated:

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. (AP) - The recent rain is welcoming news to anyone who wants to build a campfire or start up a charcoal grill. You're now free to do so across many parts of northern Arizona.

The city of Flagstaff, Coconino County, the Grand Canyon, and the Coconino and Kaibab national forests lifted all fire restrictions Tuesday.

The monsoon brought heavy rain to northern Arizona over the weekend and relief to parched landscapes.

While campfires are allowed, officials are warning people to be cautious. That includes operating ATVs with spark arrestors and putting out campfires before leaving an area. Officials say fires should be doused with water and dirt and stirred with a shovel until completely cold to the touch.
