Boyfriend arrested after woman found shot in desert

MESA, Ariz. (AP) - A 21-year-old man was arrested after Maricopa County Sheriff's deputies say a woman was found dead in the desert northeast of Mesa.

Sheriff's spokesman Chris Hegstrom says officers responded to a 911 call just before 6:30 a.m. Thursday about a shooting near Power and McDowell Roads, south of the Salt River.

Matthew Borja allegedly shot and killed his 19-year-old girlfriend.

He was arrested and charged with premeditated first degree murder, aggravated assault and unlawful imprisonment.

The woman's name hasn't been released.
