Iraqis to hold protest in downtown Phoenix

Posted: Updated:

PHOENIX (AP) - Iraqi-Americans are planning a demonstration in downtown Phoenix on Wednesday to protest an insurgent group's occupation of territory in their homeland.

Organizers say the purpose of the demonstration is to show that all Iraqis stand against the actions of the militant group Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant, also known as ISIL.

Organizer Baker Algharani says there will be Iraqi Shias, Sunnis and Christians at the demonstration.

The Phoenix area is home to a sizable population of Iraqi refugees who fled turmoil in their homeland during the reign of Saddam Hussein and in the aftermath of his defeat.
