Fire: Child dies in Phoenix apartment fire

Posted: Updated:
PHOENIX (KSAZ) - "I heard the mother screaming," said Tanika Boykins.

Tanika Boykins was about to put her baby down for a nap at the McDowell East Apartments when she heard the cries for help.

"Me and my boyfriend came out, and she was saying "my baby, my baby," my boyfriend tried to go in there but he couldn't get past the living room, it was too much," said Boykins.

The second story apartment was engulfed in flames. Two adults and three children were able to make it out safely. But a 6 month old baby was not able to be rescued, and he died inside.

Phoenix Fire said that the fire was intense and spread quickly. An off duty firefighter spotted the smoke and was one of the first on the scene.

"He made his way upstairs and actually came into contact with someone with the family, and the family had stated there was still a baby inside, he tried valiantly several times to get into the apartment and to the back area was located, he was unsuccessful in doing that," said Capt. Jonathan Jacobs.

"It was sad, all I could do was cry, and just rub her on her back as she was laying there, and try to help her other kids because they were crying it was so hard," said Boykins.

Many of the residents are having to find other places to stay, their hearts are heavy knowing a young child died.

"I wasn't expecting to hear that there were any deaths, I was hoping that everybody got out safely," said Latrice Williams.
