Can tenants negotiate for lower rent?

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

They say everything is negotiable and apparently so is your rent!

Apartment hunters don't have to settle for the terms laid out by a would-be landlord.

Because let's be honest, it’s fair to say that when it comes to paying rent in NYC, its just too high for most people.

But what many tenants don’t know is they can actually negotiate on the rent.

Depending on the market, experts say security deposits, lease length and pets policies can be successfully negotiated.

And in some instances, the amount of the rent itself.

Joe Anuta covers real estate for Crains NY.

Anuta says tenants up for renewal have the best shot with that.

“These landlords are not looking to get people and get this much higher rent because they're not going to be able to.” Anuta said. “You’re going to have a lot more leverage because again if you leave this landlord is faced with that uncertainty again. So you can sorta demand some of these concessions."

And then there are cases like Alexandra Nunez, who says her apartment needs major work done.

“We're in the process of doing that because the apartment has a couple of like things we need to fix. And I think we're paying too much” Nunez said. “Hopefully he'll lower the rent but we're not sure"

Now before you go off trying to get a lower rent make sure you've been model tenant to your landlord... before you negotiate yourself out on the street.
