Surveillance video helps police catch hiding suspects

Posted: Updated:
DETROIT (WJBK) - Surveillance video at a local business helps police catch two perpetrators who went into hiding when they figured out police were hot on their tails.

A photo of the suspects handcuffed and on their knees is posted in the middle of the K&G Party Store on Detroit's east side for every customer to see.

"That's embarrassing. They going to show everybody in the hood who they is [sic]," says Deandre Gibhan. He lives in the neighborhood.

Even the regulars who knew these men are shaking their heads, not just because of what they did but how they tried to pull off - a rooftop robbery.

"They pretty good guys. I don't know, I guess they made a bad judgement. You know, trouble is easy to get into but hard to get out of," says T Johnson.

So how did the brazen bandits break in?

Through the abandoned buildings next door. Just pick one.

Apparently, they carved a hole in the wall that connects the buildings and then crawled through it like rats.

Cameras catch the men making their way through the store, but what the suspects didn't realize is the alarm had gone off and police were on their way.

Because this is the fifth robbery over the last year, it didn't take police long to arrive.

You can see the mad dash on video. The thieves even leap over the counter to hide.

"I seen [sic] the lights from down there. I closed my door. I had nothing to do with it. My name's Bennett and I ain't in it!" Gibhan says.

When the cops were hot on their tail, the sneaky thieves scaled the wall and then tried to hide in the rafters. If it wasn't for the surveillance system in the store Detroit police probably wouldn't have found them.

You can see on video cops from three different agencies searching high and low for the crooks.

The manager tells Fox 2's Taryn Asher off camera once the alarm went off he watched the suspects' every move by the surveillance video transmitted to his phone. He was the one who told cops the three suspects were hiding in the ceiling. Police surrounded the men and forced them to come down.

"A lot of people, they have to do what they got [sic] to do, but I feel that the guys at the store, they help out the neighborhood so why would you want to break into a store that's in your own neighborhood?" says Johnson.

Police may have caught the suspects but the owners of the store doesn't plan to stick around to have this happen a sixth time.
