At a baby shower on Brockway street in El Monte there was the happiness and joy you would expect from a family celebration like that, but Brenda Avila, Diana and Alma Flores were shocked when they heard about the charges against Johnny Beserra III who volunteered at United Pentacostal Church/El Monte Christian Academy just a few houses down the street.
They didn't know Beserra, but hearing the 20-year old had been arrested and charged with sex crimes against five kids 7 to 17 from the church/school was "too close to home." "It's really disturbing," said Diana Flores. "...so, it's scary to have my nieces walk around."
Back in May police say a parent of a child got wind of what was going on at the school with the volunteer. Bescerra was arrested and has given police a statement. Police won't describe the contents of that. What we do know is that back in May, at his arraignment, Beserra pleaded not guilty to the 14 counts against him.
Lt. Williams says "since the age range of the children is so varied and the sex is both male and female we're concerned opportunities may have presented themselves and other people may have been victimized." So, Williams is asking for the public's help. If anyone knows a child or has one that may have been victimized he asks they call El Monte Police.
Meanwhile, Johnny Beserra III remains in custody at Men's Central Jail. He's being held on 9 million dollars bail. He's expected in court Thursday morning for his pre-preliminary hearing.
