2-year-old girl drowns while vacationing at Scottsdale rental home

Posted: Updated:
SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. - Police and fire crews responded to a devastating call Wednesday.  A 2-year-old girl vacationing here with her family was pulled from a backyard swimming pool.

Her family tried to give her CPR before medics arrived.

"We tried everything we could.  We did all of our advance life support we were trained on.  They did everything they could at hospital, but the child eventually expired," said Operations Chief Jay Ducote of the Scottsdale Fire Department.

"It's terrible, I couldn't believe it," said Tyler Mosser, a neighbor.

Neighbors were heartbroken to learn the child died at a hospital.

Scottsdale fire crews say the child's family of 11 rented the home near Pinnacle Peak and North 91st Street for the summer.  The group was apparently getting ready for an outing and lost track of the child when she stepped in to the pool.

There are no barriers around the pool.

Scottsdale police are investigating the case and at this point, they believe it was a tragic, yet preventable accident.

"I've been doing this for 30 years and this is the hardest call we've run on.  We have a couple firefighters that are really disturbed by it and we have to go talk to them and see how they are doing.. it's tough for all of us," said Ducote.

The child's name was not released.
