'Girls on the Run' program empowering young women

(WJBK) - Today's kids face new obstacles unique to their generation, like bullying on social media and the childhood obesity epidemic.

Now, there's an organization to help avoid these problems before they start.

Girls on the Run is a 12-week program that teaches young girls to be healthy and confident through coaching and exercise. Along with tools for developing self esteem, a positive body image and healthy habits, girls learn strategies for dealing with life's challenges.

Each team is required to do a local community service project that empowers them to make a difference, and parents are encouraged to get involved.

"When she's angry with me now or upset, she uses this whole thing now about 'I'm upset with you because', or 'You did this because', and 'I feel this way because', and I was asking her the other day where she learned that at and she told me it was from Girls on the Run," says Girls on the Run parent Kim Campbell-Williams.

Girls on the Run is active in 47 states and Canada, with more than 700 thousand volunteers and coaches that make it all happen.

And the program isn't just a learning experience for the kids.

"It encourages me to be a better woman for my girls. I've got a team of young girls looking up to me, and I'm strong for them and I keep pushing myself for them," says coach Selina Ruiz.

The season ends with a 5K event but the lessons learned continue far beyond the big race.
