Pete's Fresh Market brings hope to food desert

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) - Mayor Emanuel will help launch a new business to help generate new revenue and bring a new shopping option for people in the city.
A 68,000 Pete's Fresh Market is set to open Wednesday in the Near West Side neighborhood. The market will bring 160 full time jobs and 100 construction jobs to the neighborhood. Many people in the area hope the market will bring even more growth to the area.

Pete's Fresh Market indicated interest in the site on the southeast corner of Madison Street and Western Avenue several years ago. The site is part of an $18.4 million retail center.

Residents say the new store brings positive growth to an area that was once left with vacant lots.

"People can eat healthier now. Pete's market is very reasonable. So there is no excuse for not eating healthy," one resident said.

Mayor Emanuel says the new store will expand access to fresh, healthy food for people in a food desert. The store will also feature a burger bar, and gourmet foods and ingredients.

Pete's started out in the early 1970s as a small, full-service produce stand on the South Side of Chicago. The new store will be the seventh Pete's Fresh Market in the Chicago area. The store officially opened at 8 a.m. Wednesday morning.
