Teens put challenges aside to enjoy prom night

Posted: Updated:
DETROIT (WJBK) – "It makes me feel like I'm a princess."  That's how Hope Sorin felt on the night of her prom.

It sounds just like any other prep prom party--makeup, hair, and hope for a good night ahead, but this prom is different.

The young girls and guys you here are dealing with challenges that you don't learn to deal with in school.

Emma Webb is a rising junior in high school, who attended the “Wish Upon a Teen” prom at the St. Regis in Detroit Saturday.  She battled a brain tumor and won.  For her, the dance was about putting her battle aside to have fun.

"I'm going through treatments and stuff," Webb said, "It's just something to look forward to, have fun, feel like a real teen.”

For Webb and the 60 other teens at the prom who are dealing with unbelievably real health problems—organ transplants, tumors or cancer—this night will be cherished.  The only treatment the teens were getting Saturday was VIP.

The dance was created by Michelle Soto three years ago, who said her goal was to have the teens "Feeling happy and feeling like a prince or princess for a few hours and not worrying about treatment tomorrow or the drugs they have to take later tonight."
