Car lovers use their passion for speed to drive cancer fundraising

Posted: Updated:
WALLED LAKE, Mich. - The speed aficionados of 3Balls Racing are hosting an open track day June 21st at Waterford Hills Raceway in Clarkston for anyone who'd like to try their hand at racing - and benefit the Barbara Ann Karmanos Institute for Melanoma Research.

Curious speedsters are encouraged to take a passenger seat in a racing car during this fundraiser. Kenny the Car Guy invites anyone interested in seeing a local race and helping a good cause to consider coming out. The cause itself is close to the heart of this group, whose leader, Ken Grulich, is a melanoma survivor. Grulich, the owner and "head ball," was diagnosed with melanoma in 2011. Grulich underwent treatment at Karmanos and after beating the disease, dedicated his group to helping find a cure.

The event features two days of racing, plus silent auctions and rides with 3Balls instructors. Last year, they raised $20,000. This year, they're aiming to raise $25,000 for Karmanos. All proceeds from event entry fees are donated; a silent trackside auction will raise additional funds. Attendees will pay a nominal additional fee to go for a ride on the track with a 3Balls Racing member, or you can rent a race car and drive on the track for a fee.

3Balls Racing was founded in 2005 by three automotive engineers looking for a safe and legal way to push the limits of their driving and their vehicles.  It has grown to more than 1,200 members from across the United States and Canada.

Kenny the Car Guy grew up tinkering with vehicles, loving the grease and sweat generated by immersion in the inner workings of cars. He opened Mufflers and More 13 years ago, with a dream of servicing every car in the state of Michigan. He's been known to give his own car to a customer whose vehicle conked out right before an important event. He can't decide which part of his life he likes more - servicing customers' cars or racing with his 3Balls buddies.

Event Details:
Date: June 21st 2014.
Location:  Waterford Hills Raceway, 4770 Waterford Road, Clarkston, MI 48346
Registration Deadline:  June 14th 2014
Cost : $200.00 for track time. $10.00 for spectator. Ticket sales benefit the Barbara Ann Karmanos Institute for Melanoma Research.
