Fundraiser for teen injured in golf cart accident

Posted: Updated:
MELVINDALE, Mich. (WJBK) - A junior high school cheerleader critically injured in a golf cart accident is showing signs of progress.

Family members tell Fox 2 14-year-old Marissa Campbell has regained consciousness and is able to communicate.

'Team Marissa Stay Strong' reads the logo on T-shirts being sold to help her family as she recovers from the crash in early May that almost took her life.

Marissa and three other young girls, all relatives, were riding in a golf cart at Block and Garden in Garden City when police say they failed to yield at a stop sign and the cart was hit by an SUV.

Marissa, a cheerleader from Melvindale, suffered the most serious injuries. The other girls are okay.

"She is talking. Not walking yet, but she's talking and moving her arms and legs," says grandmother Irma Race.

"She's amazing because she's fighting to come back and she's a fighter," says aunt Darlene Varga.

Now, Marissa's family members, friends and the whole community are cheering her on.

A fundraiser was held Friday night at Melvindale Ice Arena with raffle drawings, prizes, baked goods and a spaghetti dinner.

Many people wore purple ribbons, Marissa's favorite color.

Her grandmother tells us Marissa is alert but is not aware of the accident.

Her speech was affected by a head injury but she recognizes family and friends.

"When she smiles your whole body melts because we didn't think we were going to see that smile," says Varga.

Doctors expect Marissa to remain in the hospital for at least another month, then she'll face at least one year of intense therapy. If all goes well, the teen may someday return to school.

A GoFundMe account is also set up to help with medical expenses.

Friends are also hoping to modify her house so it's wheelchair accessible when she returns home.
