Renovations coming to Michigan Central Station

DETROIT (WJBK) - Michigan Central Depot may be abandoned but it's never lonely. The parade of visitors stopping to take pictures of the historic back drop is endless.

For example, Paul Young is a visiting architect from Chicago. He came to check out the old depot and may be the only person with some real inside information as he says he was chatting with the construction crew working inside,

"He said they are working on some stabilization, more windows soon and so forth, but didn't really want to share a whole lot," Young tells FOX 2's Maurielle Lue. She says crews weren't as chatty with her.

Earlier this week news broke that the Maroun family, which owns the Michigan Central Depot, requested permits for more then 600 thousand dollars worth of work. The money will be used for safety improvements and a nine thousand pound capacity freight elevator.

Renovation crews are tight lipped at the scene so we asked our resident architect what he thought.

"That tells me that they would need an elevator to replace windows, or any work things to remove, or new materials to bring up. They need a good first-class serviceable elevator," Young says.

Turns out he was right. Late in the day, FOX 2 received this statement from depot spokesman Mickey Blashfield, NBIT. Inc.:

"A new freight elevator is the next step of work on the Michigan Central Depot and will allow the smooth installation of windows and roof work as we continue to prepare the building for a new day."

About half a dozen new windows have popped up at the old train station since late last year.

Investors have poured more than four million dollars into interior enhancements, electricity repairs, security and asbestos and water removal. That broad statement leaves a lot to the imagination, and for now that's all we have.
