Family pleads for missing dog to be returned home

Posted: Updated:
FERNDALE, Mich. (WJBK) - An autistic child is missing his only playmate and is begging for the pet to come home. A family in Ferndale explains why they believe their beloved pet dog was stolen.

"It's devastating. I wish that the person that stole him would just return him to us," says Erika Clemmons.

The sound of neighborhood dogs barking Tuesday was a sad reminder of the missing member to a family in Ferndale.

"We really miss him. He's not just a pet he's a part of our family," says Clemmons.

She says her 3-year-old family dog Miles, a 20-pound Yorkie-Bichon mix, has been missing since Sunday. But she doesn't believe he wandered off.

"For someone to just be heartless and take him, it hurts," she says.

It hurts even more, Clemmons says, because of her nonverbal autistic son, 11-year-old Jesse, who is now without his best friend.

"This dog seems to understand ... he seems to be able to communicate with him," Clemmons says.

Clemmons says Miles hasn't been seen since Sunday just before 6 p.m. when her husband gave the dog a bath.

Clemmons' husband says Miles was playing in this fenced area here after his bath, where he always plays. But minutes later he came out and he was gone.

"He's always been well-trained. He's always come to the door when he's done using the bathroom. He's never, ever run off," Clemmons says.

Searching their neighborhood, calling police and posting these signs everywhere, Clemmons says Miles is microchipped and was wearing his collar with tags. Now, she is pleading for whomever took him, or whomever sees him, to bring him home to his best friend.

"He's missing his dog," she says. "Please, get Miles back home to his family."
