Group pressures lawmakers to lower NYC speed limit

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

Members of a group called Families for Safe Streets gathered at City Hall Park Tuesday to demand change: they want the speed limit in New York City dropped to 25 mph from 30 mph. They clung to pictures of loved ones, all hit by speeding cars on New York City streets.

Mayor Bill de Blasio has also been fighting to lower the speed limit as part of his Vision Zero effort to eliminate traffic deaths across the city. The Department of Transportation has already reduced the speed limit on several major roadways.

But time is running out to get it done citywide. The state Legislature has to step in and pass a law giving the city the power. Even though Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver said he has enough votes to get the bill through the Assembly, the legislation still does not have a sponsor in the Senate. The legislative session ends on June 19.

So Families for Safe Streets is hoping thousands of signatures on petitions will get to the hands of the right people before it's too late.

"We are here to demand to the New York state Senate that they demonstrate courage and they demonstrate leadership and pass a bill that will save lives as soon as it's passed," said Aaron Charlop-Powers, the founder of Families for Safe Streets.
