Senate panel to mull repeal of ticket scalping ban

Posted: Updated:
LANSING, Mich. (AP) -- Michigan's ban against scalping tickets is up for debate.

A state Senate committee will hear testimony Tuesday on legislation to legalize the resale of tickets for above face value. The fight pits sports teams and concert venues against ticket brokers and others who say Michigan's law is unfair and unevenly enforced.

The House approved the bill in February. Republican Senate Majority Leader Randy Richardville scheduled his hearing the last week before lawmakers take a summer break, so imminent action seems unlikely.

Critics say the ban is the only legal prohibition keeping brokers honest and preventing them from gobbling up the bulk of tickets without permission. Brokers counter it's often teams or concert promoters themselves ripping people off by reaching their own resale deals with StubHub or Ticketmaster.
