MOTORCYCLE SAFETY: Widow speaks out after 5 die in 1 week

MINNEAPOLIS (KMSP) -

Just this past week, her husband died in in a motorcycle crash -- but although the pain of that loss is still raw, Yolanda Saxon wanted to share a simple message for anyone on the roads.

Despite having suffered such a devastating loss so recently, Saxon felt so strongly about the issue of motorcycle safety that the recent widow mustered a call to action: Always be mindful of your driving and those around you on the road.

"Someone came to my job and got me and just said, 'You need to go to the hospital. He's been in an accident and it doesn't look good,'" Saxon recalled.

When she learned her husband, 49-year-old Latimothy Saxon, had been struck by a car on Penn Avenue and 23rd Avenue, she was shocked.

"It's hard when you don't have someone you're used to coming home to, that cooks for you," Saxon said.

Although her husband didn't own a helmet, police say the driver that struck him had pulled onto Penn Avenue just as Latimothy Saxon and another biker approached the intersection. Latimothy Saxon died of his injuries at North Memorial Medial Center, but he was not the only one to die in a motorcycle crash last week. Five others were also killed in crashes.

"It's really heartbreaking to see these kind of statistics happen to motorcyclists," Michael Berger, a member of the American Bikers for Awareness Training and Education, told Fox 9 News.

Berger says the issue of motorcycle safety goes far beyond the choice to wear a helmet.

"The only thing that has proven statistically to help in regards to lowering motorcycle fatalities, that's awareness and training programs -- and the state of Minnesota has some of the best," he said.

So far this year, 11 people have been killed in motorcycle accidents, and crashes have injured 28 others since May 29th.

"It's a lesson for people to be careful," Saxon said. "If you see a stop sign and you see motorcycles, you need to be cautious. People need to be cautious not just because this happened to my husband but because there's other people who get hurt from motorcycles and you just need to be careful."

A memorial fund for Latimothy Saxon has been set up to help with funeral expenses, and donations to the Latimothy Saxon Fund can be made at any TCF Bank branch.
