Chicagoans react to weekend violence

Posted: Updated:
CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) - It's been another dangerous weekend on Chicago's streets, with at least three people shot dead and 19 wounded by Saturday night. Two of the wounded include Chicago police officers who were shot after pulling over a car for a traffic stop. The police fired back and wounded two suspects in the car. The police will recover.

The violence left small pockets of grief along the streets. At 56th and South Wabash in Washington Park, friends grieved for 18-year-old Brian Weekly, who was shot and killed early Saturday morning.

“He was a good person, a good dude, he had just got shot though, he was trying to chill out,” said Rashad Davis. “It’s messed up right now."

Davis said the police can’t help.

“Can’t nothing help right now,” said Davis.

But people at Chicago State University, where "Sisters on the Street" and "Brothers on the Block" volunteers were training said they believe the community can make a difference. They are pledging to walk several blocks in Chicago's most violent neighborhoods every Thursday and Friday this summer, reaching out to strangers and trying to stop the violence.

“We’re a part of this too. We live out here and we don’t want to get shot trying to make it home,” said Lisa Ward, a Sisters on the Street volunteer.

The training, spearheaded by New Beginnings Church Pastor Corey Brooks, included talk about strategy and safety. Some volunteers said they were trying to use their own negative experiences as inspiration to do good.

“Although I’m not a criminal, I did things I’m not proud of. Now, I’m trying to help,” said Sidney Wright, a Brothers on the Block volunteer.
