PHOENIX (KSAZ) - There are a number of fitness supplements out on the market, but of all the ways to keep your body fit and in shape this particular method might be a little out there.

Some bodybuilders are turning to human breast milk to pump up, but a valley doctor says that is not a good idea.

Body builders who drink breast milk claim it gives them energy and helps them build muscle in a natural way. But, doctors warn about potential dangers from buying breast milk on the internet from people they don't know since it could carry diseases such as HIV and hepatitis.

When you think of breast milk, what comes to mind is a mother breastfeeding her newborn baby. Now some body builders are touting breast milk as "the perfect supplement" for working out because of the nutrients and protein it contains.

People we talked to heading to the gym tonight say that's just weird. "Would I consider drinking breast milk? Probably not. Something just weird about it. Yeah, I don't think so," said one gym patron.

"I don't think I'd give my breast milk to anyone besides my child that's really weird, I don't know, it's bizarre," said another woman.

"The reality is that breast milk is for baby humans, not for adults," said Dr. Jack Wolfson.

Wolfson is a cardiologist who says the idea of drinking breast milk for muscle gains in adults has been talked about for decades.

"The idea is these men think it's gonna boost athletic performance, muscle ability, give them energy, all kinds of ideas that these men are coming up with in terms of the benefits," said Wolfson.

But he doesn't recommend it, in fact, he says there's no proof it actually works.

"Well, there's certainly no scientific benefit, and there's nothing in the medical literature that says anything about adults consuming breast milk has any health benefits," he said. And he said that it could be dangerous.

"One of the dangers that i foresee in this practice is where is the milk coming from? Who's regulating that breast milk that these men are purchasing over the internet?" said Wolfson.

Health experts say there is no proof that the growth hormones found in breast milk will have any effect on adults and that it is best left for babies who are nursing and not a workout supplement.
