PHOENIX (KSAZ) -

It's a scene that's becoming all too familiar.

A final farewell to 37-year-old Officer Jair Cabrera -- the third officer killed in the valley in less than three months.

"I'm proud of him because it's not easy.. it's a hard job.. very difficult, but he did it the best he could and he loved doing it," said Jair's father, Alfredo Cabrera.

Officer Cabrera was a seven year veteran of the Salt River Police.  He decided to become an officer years ago when his best friend was killed by a drunk driver.

"Jair took it very personal.. said this cannot happen all the time.  I have to do something about it and that's when he first started to think of becoming a police officer," said Alfredo.

Officer Cabrera worked in patrol, specializing in DUI enforcement.

"Every time he detained a drunk guy, a guy under the influence, he was preventing for that guy to have an accident and kill one of us, so that was his main purpose -- to save lives," said Alfredo.

Ironically, Cabrera was gunned down early Saturday morning during a DUI patrol near Pima and Chaparral.

"Jair was the living embodiment of that motto -- protecting and serving," said Salt River Police Chief Patrick Melvin.

"Jair is my little hero," said Alfredo.

His dad's hero and no doubt a hero to his mom, fiance, brother and countless friends.

"Every time I picture him, he's got that smile on his face making everybody around him feel good.  It was a honor to have known him," said a childhood friend.  "I'll miss you Jair and I hope I see you again on the other side."

Cabrera grew up in the Los Angeles area. His father says he'd start a petition to help officers get bulletproof windshields.
