Retired veteran shot by burglars

Posted: Updated:

An Army veteran who came home from tours in the Middle East without a scratch is in an Atlanta hospital after he was shot by burglars.

A hospital bed is unfamiliar to 52-year-old Amos King.

The 28-year Army veteran says he went to war during Desert Storm and then served his country in various capacities, ending up a Lt. Colonel without a scratch.

But earlier in May while serving legal papers at a Stone Mountain home, he interrupted a burglary and was shot.

King told FOX 5’s George Franco, “One of them took the gun, slapped me across with it. I jumped over the porch. He shot me.”

King says he crawled to the driveway where he was bleeding out after a bullet severed a main artery in his leg.

Military training, he says, then took over with him making a tourniquet with his shirt and a stick.

If he hadn’t, King said, “I wouldn’t be here probably.”

DeKalb County Police have released a neighbor's cell phone video of a green four door sedan speeding away.

Investigators are searching for two men who they believe are between 19 and 15.

Those ages, King notes, are the same as men he trained for war for the Georgia National Guard.

Now he's trying to make sense of civilian violence which led to six surgeries and the near loss of his leg.

From his hospital room at Grady Memorial Hospital, King said, “I had a good career but on this day, I had a bad day. They had no remorse, no remorse at all.”

King isn’t sure he'll return to serving legal papers after the shooting.

He says he has a master’s degree in education and will likely turn to teaching, thanking God he's alive.

“It's a long way back for me because I got to go to rehab. I can't walk right now but I’m just thankful that I'm still here”, said King.
