Man robbed by gunman hiding in his car's backseat

Posted: Updated:
DETROIT (WJBK) - Nathaniel Reaves says Wednesday morning all he had were plans to go fishing. Now, he's just happy to be alive.

Reaves tells Detroit police just before 5 a.m. Wednesday he went to the Marathon gas station on Fenkell and Ferguson to get a pack of cigarettes before his fishing trip.

"This car pulled up and stopped in front of the filling station door and I went on in the store and didn't think about the car that was parked outside," Reaves tells FOX 2's Erika Erickson.

As seen in surveillance video, a man jumps out and apparently gets into Reaves's back seat while another man wearing a gray shirt follows Reaves into the gas station. Reaves, in the yellow shirt, chats and buys his cigarettes. Meanwhile, the other man is scoping him out.

"As you can see in the video he [doesn't] buy anything; he comes only to look and leave," says the gas station's manager Hussain Daher.

As Reaves makes his way back to his truck that's when he says he discovered a man already inside.

"He pulled a gun on me and the guy that was in the store with me came back and helped rob me while the other passenger that was in the backseat held a gun to my head," Reaves says.

All of this happened while another man, possibly the driver, looked on. The trio got away with $120 in cash and Reaves's wallet before running back to their car and taking off. Police were called right away.

"Before, if we called them, they come next day or after two days what's happening. But now, they come in 10, 15 minutes at least," says Daher.

While Reaves is still shaken up he's feeling confident police will catch the perpetrators but still, leaves a warning to watch out.

"All senior citizens - beware of your surroundings when you're out early in the morning and late at night."

Police are still searching for those three men in that dark gray Chrysler all appearing to be in their 20s. If you know the men in the surveillance video please call Detroit police or Crimes Stoppers at 1-800-SPEAK-UP.
