PAYSON, Ariz. -
Payson Fire Department officials say a toddler has died following an accidental shooting involving another child on Tuesday.
Payson Police Chief Donald Engler says at 12:10 p.m., they received several 911 calls indicating there was a child with a head injury near Ash and Bonita Streets.
A 3 year-old accidentally shot his 1½-year-old brother in the head after finding a loaded gun in another room of the apartment. The mother was just walking into the room when the shot went off, she then took the wounded boy into the parking lot.
The 1½-year-old, who was shot in the head, was transported to Payson Regional Medical Center, where he was later pronounced dead.
Police say the handgun belonged to a 78-year-old man who lived at the apartment. The victim and his family were visiting at the apartment when the shooting happened.
Payson Police Chief Don Engler says his department's investigation of the Tuesday shooting will take about a week. He says results will be forwarded to the Gila County Attorney's Office for a decision on whether to prosecute anybody.
Engler says the probe centers on the securing of the gun, which he says was not in plain sight in the living area of the neighbor's apartment.
Bob Onsguard stopped to help as police were arriving. "I just stopped the vehicle over there and I ran over there, a police officer ran over there, he grabbed the baby and put the baby on the ground," said Onsguard.
Payson Police say their investigation continues and no names have been released.
