OAK PARK, Ill. (Sun-Times Media Wire) - Two Nicor workers fought off an attempted robbery on Tuesday, then held the suspect until police arrived, Pioneer Press is reporting.

Joshua D. Pierce, 23, was charged with attempted robbery for the incident, Oak Park police said.

Pierce blindsided a Nicor worker who was returning to his truck in the first block of Van Buren at 10:45 a.m., according to Det. Sgt. Michael Richardson.

“He was going back to his Nicor truck when he saw Pierce run up behind him out of the corner of his eye,” Richardson said. “Pierce struck him in the left side of the head and then hit him three or four times with closed fists.”

As Pierce attempted to throw the worker to the ground, the worker called out for help from his partner, Richardson said. The second worker pushed the offender away from the victim.

“The victim got up and stood in a boxer’s position as if he wanted to fight,” Richardson said. “The offender started to run and one of the two workers started to chase him. He was able to tackle him and hold him until police arrived.”

During the attack, Pierce said he planned to take something from the worker, Richardson said.

After his arrest, Pierce, of the 400 block of Washington Street in Oak Park, admitted he was planning to steal tools from the workers’ truck, Richardson said.

The victim, a Hillside resident, suffered only a cut on his elbow and did not require medical attention, Richardson said.
