3rd site in Suffolk Country tested for contaminants

Posted: Updated:

Add Veterans Way to the list of sites being investigated in connection with illegal dumping in Islip, N.Y. The 6-home cul-de-sac in the Islandia was built and sold to returning veterans and their families at deeply discounted prices this past December.

"We are absolutely frustrated and just totally upset about what has happened," said Mitchell Pally, the CEO of Long Island Builders Group, whose subsidiary built the homes on a site. "It's our responsibility and if [the homes'] existence there is threatened in any way we will take remedial action."

DFF Farm Corp. and the Datre family were associated with the Veterans Way project. Last week, evidence was seized from the Datre headquarters in connection to the criminal sweep at Roberto Clemente Park. DFF Farm Corp.'s attorney said work on both projects was lawful.

The soil at Veterans Way is now being tested for contaminants. Residents that I talked to said they are not going to worry until all of the facts are in.

Pally said his company has asked the Suffolk County District Attorney's Office for permission to do its own testing on the soil. If the tests are positive, Pally says the company will find a way to decontaminate the area. He said relocating the homes is not an option.

District Attorney Thomas Spota criticized the town of Islip for not knowing about the illegal dumping even after complaints were made.

"Shock, devastation, we're incredibly upset that this is unraveling before us in our town," said Inez Birbiglia from the town of Islip. She said the calls were answered, and the owner of the Route 111 site, Tommy Lau, is due in court at the end of June.

"We are supporting the district attorney to find those deemed criminally responsible," she said.
