11 year-old boy drowns; dies at valley hospital

Posted: Updated:
TOLLESON, Ariz. - Phoenix Fire Department crews were at the scene of a reported drowning near 107th Avenue and Buckeye on Wednesday afternoon.

According to Captain Ruben Saavedra, an 11-year-old boy was rushed by an air ambulance to a local hospital.

Wednesday evening, Phoenix Police said Ivan Nunez died at the hospital a short time later.

Witnesses say that the boy was playing in the back yard of the house in an above ground pool with other children. Authorities say the child's siblings were swimming and told their father something was going on with the boy. The father initiated CPR on the child after he was pulled from the above ground pool by his 15 year-old brother.

Phoenix Police say that the boy was described as a good swimmer. He was trying to remove a plastic cover and investigators are looking into whether he became entangled in the cover.
