Red Cross volunteers head to tornado-affected areas

Posted: Updated:
PHOENIX (KSAZ) - Three volunteers from Arizona are set to arrive in the southeastern U.S. Thursday evening.

They will be helping in areas ravaged by tornadoes earlier this week.

FOX 10 caught up with them as they prepared to leave to help out damaged neighborhoods.

Jean Curry is on her way to Meridian Mississippi; she is one of three Arizona volunteers helping in the area damaged by tornadoes.

Jean's expected to help people find clothing nd shelter after their lives were ripped apart by a string of tornadoes in the southeast.

"We know there's gonna be hardships, we may be in a shelter, we may be in cots, we may be wherever we need to be, but it's what we do," she said.

As many as 79 tornadoes hit the Unites States this week killing at least 17 people.

The most power twister is an EF-4 that slammed into Mississippi, homes here were reduced to rubble.

"The victims, the clients are in worse situations than we are, because they don't have anybody taking care of them and making sure, so that's why were there to help the clients get what they need," she said.

Curry has worked with the Red Cross for the past four years. She has worked in many disaster areas including twice for Hurricane Sandy.

"I want to help people, and I've always been somebody from a social work background, that's what I do, it basically feels good to help the families," said Curry.

She could be staying in the area as long as three weeks, now it's a question of what work has to be done.

"Sometimes we're doing call centers; sometimes we're looking at recovery efforts, and all of that. Whatever is needed that's what we do," she said.

All three of the Arizona volunteers deployed by the Red Cross will spend anywhere from 1-3 weeks in these devastated areas.
