Whistleblower sticks to his story despite VA head's claims

PHOENIX (KSAZ) - Dr. Samuel Foote spent decades working for the Phoenix VA Medical Center, he says he can prove that there was a secret waiting list that postponed veteran care.

"To date we have found no evidence of a secret list, and we have no patients who have died because they have been on a waiting list," said Dr. Robert Petzel with the Department of Veterans Affairs.

Dr. Robert A Petzel, the head of Veteran Health Services says there is no evidence that a secret waiting list at the Phoenix VA existed, but Dr. Sam Foote, who worked at the medical center for more than 20 years says this is a cover up.

"I don't know how he can possibly make that statement, he must not have been watching television for the last two weeks in Phoenix, or he would have heard the stories of all the families who have lost loved ones due to delays in care at the Phoenix VA," said Dr. Foote.

Dr. Foote says there's more evidence than just stories, and that there is proof of a secret list. He's turned evidence over to the Inspector General, in fact; he spent an hour and a half with the IG's team last week but he could not give us details about the meeting.

"There is a mountain of evidence on that subject that is sitting on the IG's desk here in Phoenix and its growing larger every single day," said Foote.

While he cannot provide many details due to the potential for a criminal investigation, Foote is confident that the inspector general will discover secret waiting lists that led to veterans deaths.

"I think that we need to be very respectful of our veterans families their loved ones served this country honorably, and they deserve the truth, and not another Washington coverup," he said.

Meanwhile Wednesday, Matt Salmon and Kyrsten Sinema proposed an amendment to a current bill that would reallocate one million dollars to the veteran's affairs office office of the inspector general for these types of investigations.

Arizona Congressmen David Schweikert, Matt Salmon and Trent franks also urged Phoenix VA director Sharon Helman and her team of administrators to step down.
