PHOENIX (KSAZ) - A former Tempe police officer who led police on a high speed chase last December  slammed head-on into a semi while drunk near Yuma.

On Monday, Garrett Michael Peterson is found dead in his jail cell.
    
Garrett Peterson, a six year veteran, resigned from the Tempe police department after being arrested twice in a three day period last December.

He was facing a number of felony charges when he was found dead in his jail cell.
    
31 year old former Tempe police officer "Garrett Michael Peterson" found dead this morning in his cell, in a Yuma jail.

It's where he's been locked up since December 16th after being arrested for crashing head on into a semi truck on Interstate 8 while driving under the influence.

The crash happened just hours after Peterson was released from jail in the valley after leading Gilbert police on a high speed chase that ended in a standoff on the loop 202.

The pursuit stemming from threats Peterson allegedly made against his ex wife Peterson was the only person in his cell at the time of his death.

An autopsy will be performed to determine how he died.
    
Garrett Peterson's family was told earlier today about his death.

He was being held on a one million dollar bond and facing charges of endangerment, aggravated assault, assault with a deadly weapon, and unlawful flight from law enforcement.
