MESA, Ariz. -

Mesa Police say a suspect involved in an officer-involved shooting has died, and a police dog that was injured is recovering at home today.

Police responded to a home near Broadway and Stapley at 7pm Saturday evening, after a neighbor reported an intruder was inside a home.  The homeowner, who was out-of-town, confirmed to police that nobody should be in the house.

The intruder came out of the home, police say, and was ignoring officers' commands.  Police fired several "bean bag" rounds at the suspect before sending Jake the K-9 after him.  The K-9 bit the suspect, who then dragged the dog into the home.  Officers say that's where the suspect stabbed the dog several times.

The suspect barricaded himself inside the home and kept waving a handgun at officers, according to Mesa Police.  An officer fired one round at the suspect, and once police were inside the home, they found the person deceased.  It's not clear if the suspect's injuries were from the officer's weapon, or if they were self-inflicted.

A veterinarian tells police that Jake the K-9 has been in surgery and is expected to survive.

The K-9 is back at home recovering, police say, and there were no other injuries.  Mesa Police have expressed their gratitude for the community's concern for Jake the K-9.
