DETROIT (WJBK) - A paralyzed man says he is without his wheelchair after Detroit police tagged it for evidence after a shooting.

Marty D is a rapper and has been paralyzed from the waist down since he was 10 years old.

He tells FOX 2's Maurielle Lue he was doing a paid gig at a nightclub earlier this month when gunfire suddenly rang out. People started running, and he says he had no choice but to leave his wheelchair behind and crawl to safety.

"I couldn't get to the side of the building where everybody ran to, so I dived down to the ground and scooted onto Gratiot into the front of a car that was out there while the shooting was going on. As they were shooting, the bullets were hitting the car and it felt like they were getting closer to me," he says.

He crawled down the street and told his brother where to find him. His cousin carried him to the car and they drove off.

Marty D says he then tried to go back for his wheelchair, but police told him it was behind the processing line and it couldn't be released.

Seven people were shot that night. Marty D says two of those people were there at the club with him.

Marty D has fallen victim to gun violence once before in his life. He was accidentally shot by a neighbor. Now, he raps about surviving in Detroit.

Lue reports Detroit police said Wednesday they will replace the man's wheelchair. Police confirmed it was tagged as evidence, but now say it's unaccounted for. Police say Marty D never should have been told to go home without it.
