Eat for the Test!

If you're a parent, you know it's test time! Lisa Lake of Lithonia has two kids taking the CRCT this year, 11 year old Rhema and 9-year old Emmanuel. And the stakes are high. Lake says, "It's a lot of pressure. It determines whether the kids promote to the next grade. That's a huge stress on parent and child.

If you want your student to test well, Cheryl Williams, a registered dietitian with Children's Healthcare of Atlanta says breakfast is the most important meal. You want to work in several food groups. Williams explains, "So maybe a whole grain. 100% whole grain toast and grab something from the protein group, like a boiled egg. Add some fruit. And think about something from the dairy group, like a glass of low fat milk. That is going to help keep the child energized.

Williams says fiber is important, too. It helps keep student full, and sustain their energy. Williams says, "When you consider these kids are taking these exams, they need to keep their mental focus high and not be sluggish."

The CRCT is a long haul, spread out over several days, so Williams says try cutting back on processed foods, like sugary cereals on test days. She says, "Those foods are going to give them a short burst of energy, usually followed by a crash. So, they will get sluggish, may irritable, and that's the last thing you want on test day."

Another thing you don't want? A sleepy test-taker. Elementary school age kids need anywhere from seven to twelve hours of sleep. So, make sure your kids are getting to be on time the night before the test.
