Girl, 9, dies after getting hit by car at elementary school

Posted: Updated:
Canton, Mich. (WJBK) - A second grader at an elementary school in southeast Michigan died after being hit by a vehicle during morning drop-off, officials say.

Authorities say after the girl got out of the car her mother began to pull away and, not realizing the girl was possibly trying to get back into the car, struck the 9-year-old.

Canton paramedics were called to Ruth Eriksson Elementary in Canton. Canton Deputy Chief Debra Newsom says, to her indication, the girl was at one point sitting up and speaking with first responders. She was transported to the University of Michigan Hospital in Ann Arbor where she was later pronounced dead.

The apparent accident happened Monday morning around 8:30 a.m.

At approximately 9:50 a.m., the school phoned an automated voice message to parents alerting them of what happened. Later that day, around 4 p.m., a second automated voice message was phoned out informing parents the child had died.

Guidance counselors will be available at school for students to speak with.
