Parents travel to Springfield to fight for charter schools

Posted: Updated:
CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

State lawmakers will be voting on bills considered to be anti-charter, after a Sun-Times analysis reported students in charter schools do not perform that much better than students in regular schools.

There are about a dozen bills before lawmakers that pro- charter school parents say are anti-charter. One would eliminate the Illinois State Charter School Commission, one would limit how they market their option to students, and another would limit charter schools power to impose tougher discipline policies.

Charter school advocates traveled to Springfield to fight for the schools Tuesday. Chicago parents rallied at U.S. Cellular Field Tuesday morning before their buses left for the state capitol.

They say a hostile environment is brewing, pitting charter schools against neighborhood schools. More than 1,000 people turned out for the rally before the 25 buses left for Springfield.

The parents told Fox 32 News their mission is to leave a lasting impression on lawmakers. They say the elimination of charter schools would deny access to quality education in Chicago. According to these parents, the legislation would threaten the choice parents they have when choosing public schools.

The biggest critics of charters are from the Chicago Teachers Union, who say charters need to be more accountable to taxpayers. Charter school advocates say they are closely monitored by the Chicago School Board.

Organizers have meetings with state legislators when theyarrive in Springfield. But they believe parent power will be the mostaffective.
