PHOENIX (KSAZ) -

Two people are in the hospital after a five vehicle pile-up on State Route 101 at 7th Street.

One of the two injured is a Phoenix Police Detective who was conducting a traffic stop on the freeway, the other is a motorcyclist who has life threatening injuries.

It all started when the detective stopped a passenger car for a moving traffic violation. As the detective and the car pulled to the right emergency lane a truck carrying a camping trailer rear-ended the detective's SUV.

At the same time a separate SUV was slowing down due to congestion in the far left, HOV lane. A sport motorcycle rear-ended the SUV and the rider was thrown from the vehicle.

The detective's injuries are non life threatening. Both injured motorists were taken to John C. Lincoln North Mountain for treatment.
