WJBK - SMART says tax increase needed to keep bus system afloat

The SMART system says it needs more money to keep the bus system running. Thousands of people around metro Detroit depend on the buses to get around.

Now, SMART is asking for a tax increase and say if the millage isn't approved the bus system could be out of business by 2015.

The Suburban Mobility Authority for Regional Transportation, or SMART, is seeking a near half million increase expected to generate $28 million per year.

The hike would have to be approved by voters in Oakland, Macomb and Wayne counties.

John Hertel of SMART says if the millage isn't increased, a deficit of 5 million dollars a year is projected. Hertel declined an interview, only wanting to make his proposal public at county commission meetings.

The commissioners have until the end of April to make their decision if the issue will be on the August ballot.
