WHEATON, Ill. (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

A man charged in a shooting that killed a northwest suburban tobacco store clerk pleaded guilty to aggravated battery Thursday, and must testify against other defendants in the case.

Kenneth Bardlett, 20, of Bellwood, pleaded guilty to one count of aggravated battery with a firearm, a statement from the DuPage County State's Attorney's office said.

As part of his plea agreement, Bardlett will be required to testify against other co-defendants in the case, prosecutors said.

Tremayne Davis and Stephan Russell are also charged in relation to the Jan. 10 shooting that killed clerk Hussein Saghir at Sam's Tobacco and Food Mart at 235 W. Irving Park Rd. in Bensenville, prosecutors said.

Authorities allege Bardlett and at least one other person encountered Saghir and his brother as they were closing the store for the evening. After a brief altercation, Saghir was shot and killed, and Bardlett and his accomplices fled, prosecutors said.

Davis, 23, of the 1400 block of North Lotus Avenue, is charged with first-degree murder and attempted robbery, according to authorities. He is being held in the DuPage County Jail on $2.5 million bond, and will next appear in court April 16.

Russell, 20, of the 3500 block of West Armitage Avenue, has been charged with intimidation and harassing a witness related to the case -- a person related to Bardlett, authorities said previously. He is being held on a $250,000 bond, and will next appear in court April 14.

Bardlett will next appear in court Sept. 25 for a status hearing, prosecutors said. A sentencing date has not been set.
