Anoka-Hennepin teachers set strike authorization vote date

Posted: Updated:
COON RAPIDS, Minn. (KMSP) -

Teachers for Minnesota's largest school district have set April 17th as the day they will vote whether or not to go on strike.

This comes after the school district and Anoka-Hennepin Education Minnesota (AHEM) failed to come to terms on a new contract. They have met 16 times over the last nine months, but have yet to agree on several key issues including salaries, better health insurance and long-term compensation.

Though the two sides can go back the bargaining table at any time, there isn't a meeting currently scheduled.

If a majority of voters check "yes" on April 17, the AHEM Executive Board has the authority to call a strike in the future. The board is not obligated to call an immediate strike. If a strike is authorized, the union must give the district formal notice. Then, a mandatory 10-day cooling off period follows and a strike can commence any time during the ensuing 15 days.
